The Discover Jazz Workshop

Spring Semester, 2025
RJO's Discover Jazz Workshop Registration
The RJO Saturday Discover Jazz Workshops are taught by Dylan Coleman-Tunstall and guest instructors. Rehearsals and concerts will be held at the Note-Able Music Therapy Services building, 2590 Orovada Street, Reno, NV.
In this 8-week program, students work on rhythmic exercises, ear training, jazz tunes, listening, improvisation, and chords and scales. These important skills will set them up for success for their school ensembles and open them up to opportunities to audition for local honor groups or the Reno Youth Jazz Orchestra.
The culminating project will be two performances opening for the Reno Jazz Orchestra.
All sessions are 9am-11am.
The Discover Jazz Workshop Combo
The Discover Jazz Workshop Combo offers an engaging and supportive environment for students eager to delve deeper into the world of jazz, meeting for eight Saturdays of intensive musical exploration. Geared towards individuals looking to hone their improvisation techniques and sharpen their ear training abilities, the workshop fosters a collaborative setting where musical skills can flourish. The journey culminates in two exciting live "Capstone Performances," providing a valuable opportunity for students to showcase their growth and artistry.
GEMS Jazz Combo: A space for female and non-binary music students
Creating a supportive and empowering jazz group specifically for female and non-binary students is crucial for several reasons. Historically, the jazz world has been heavily male-dominated, often leading to underrepresentation and a lack of dedicated mentorship and role models for these individuals. By establishing a safe and inclusive space, we actively dismantle these barriers, fostering an environment where female and non-binary students feel comfortable taking risks, experimenting freely with improvisation, and developing their unique voices without the pressures of traditional gender dynamics. This dedicated space encourages confidence building, cultivates a strong sense of belonging, and ultimately broadens the creative landscape of jazz by nurturing a more diverse and vibrant generation of musicians who might otherwise be discouraged or overlooked.
The Gems Jazz Combo is by invitation and teacher recommendation.
